Slovak Foreign Ministry Not Commenting on Latest UN Sec-Gen Vote

Bratislava, August 30 (TASR) – The Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry doesn’t want to comment on the significance of the third unofficial vote of a new United Nations secretary-general (UNSG), TASR learnt on Tuesday.

Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak garnered the second highest number of votes – nine votes for, five against and one with no opinion on the candidate. Former Portuguese prime minister Antonio Guterres again received the most affirmative votes (11), with only three against and one with no opinion.

“It’s still just an internal process of the UN Security Council that isn’t commented on by any of its members. This process continues, and so it would have been premature to comment on it,” ministry spokesperson Peter Stano told TASR.

The mandate of incumbent UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon will conclude after two terms in December 2016, with his successor slated to assume office as of January 1, 2017.
