SNS in Favour of Closing Shops on Public Holidays
Bratislava, January 14 (TASR) – Work on public holidays – unless required for the essential personnel such as fire-fighters, police officers and doctors – is equivalent to modern-day slavery, and the supra-national retail chains are typically the slaveholders, according to the Slovak National Party (SNS).
To this end, SNS – along with its coalition partners Smer-SD and Most-Hid – is tabling a Labour Code amendment whereby the annual amount of free days for people working in retail would be increased from the current 3.5 to 15.5.
“The rules must be set so as to ensure that work on public holidays isn’t the only possibility for ordinary workers to provide for their families and at the expense of time spent with their relatives,” said SNS leader Andrej Danko.
As a result, some of the shoppers and the retail chain employees may use their spare time to cultivate traditional family values or pursue their interests at cultural events or in tourism, which augurs well for the development of these sectors, according to SNS.
The bill on closing the shops on public holidays should be presented to Parliament in February, and it’s envisaged that it could enter into force as of May Day.
