A Total of 10 Asylum Applications Recorded in Slovakia in 2Q16

Luxembourg/Bratislava, September 22 (TASR) – In the second quarter of this year (2Q16) Slovakia has recorded the lowest number of first-time asylum applications in the European Union, with the figure reaching 10 applications, according to the latest Eurostat statistics released on Thursday.
A low number of asylum seekers was also recorded in Romania, Portugal, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Estonia.
According to the Eurostat report, first-time asylum applications in the EU reached a total of 305,715 between April and June, representing an increase by 6 percent when compared to the first three months of this year.
The most asylum applications in 2Q16 were submitted by migrants in Germany (more than 187,000), representing 61 percent of all applications. Germany was followed by Italy (27,000 applications), France (17,800), Hungary (14,900) and Greece (12,000), stated the report.
The largest share of applicants continued to come from Syria (90,500), followed by Afghanistan (50,300) and Iraq (34,300).
In its press release Eurostat also pointed out that more than one million applications are still pending at the offices of EU states.
