Five Slovaks Killed in Bus Crash near Serbian Town of Aleksinac
Belgrade, June 21 (TASR) – A hospital in the Serbian town of Nis has admitted 14 people that were injured in a bus crash near the Serbian town of Aleksinac in which five Slovaks were killed earlier on Tuesday morning, TASR learnt on the same day.
According to Nis Clinical Centre director Miodrag Lazic, there was only one seriously injured person, while the remaining 13, including a child, suffered only slight injuries.
The bus, which belonged to Aeolus travel agency, was carrying 29 passengers and two drivers from the Greek island of Corfu back to Slovakia. Five Slovak tourists were killed and 23 other passengers were injured. The cause of the crash is still unknown.
Head of the Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry’s press department Igor Skocek informed TASR that the Slovak consul in Belgrade has been dispatched to the scene of the accident. Her Czech colleague is also heading there as well because Czech nationals were also on the bus.
Czech news website iDnes.cz reported that there were 12 Czech tourists on the vehicle. “There were Hungarians, Slovaks and 12 Czechs on the bus,” confirmed Aeolus spokesperson Tomas Nemec.
The tragic accident took place on a section of the Belgrade-Skopje motorway approximately 200 kilometres from the Serbian capital at around 3:30 a.m. The five Slovaks were killed when the bus overturned onto its right side and they became trapped beneath it, reported Serbian State Radio and Television (RTS), quoting police sources.
