Lajcak: Slovakia's Name Has Ring to It in UN
New York, September 23 (TASR-correspondent) – Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak (a Smer-SD nominee) on Sunday told the media that this year’s UN General Assembly will be mainly focused on climate change and that a separate UN summit on this issue will be held on Monday.
Lajcak is accompanying Slovak President Zuzana Caputova, who’ll give a speech at the summit. The minister noted that not every leader has been granted this opportunity, explaining that only around half of the EU presidents will deliver speeches.
“On one hand, it confirms our interest in this issue and that we recognise its gravity; on the other; it proves that Slovakia’s name has a ring to it in the UN,” said Lajcak.
Lajcak feels that there are expectations that the summit could be a turning point. “We’re still not meeting our commitments; we’re failing to stop global warming, the process is continuing instead,” he said.
The minister went on to note that Slovakia is the only Visegrad Four country (V4: Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland) to join the cause of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
