SHMU: Ground Frost May Hit Five Slovak Regions

Bratislava, August 10 (TASR) – While hardly anyone would expect frost in Slovakia in mid-August – perhaps apart from High and Low Tatras – it may indeed appear in as many as five out of eight Slovak regions on Friday early morning, the Slovak Hydrometerological Institute (SHMU) reported on Wednesday.

A first-degree (least serious) alert is in place for the regions of Banska Bystrica, Trencin, Zilina, Kosice and Presov. Ground frost in these regions may appear between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. on Friday. Even southern districts of these regions can see temperatures close to the ground falling to -2 degrees Celsius.

“Such ground frost represents a potential danger for thermophilic plants (such as grapes, peppers and other vegetables),” cautioned SHMU.
