ZAP: Slovakia's Car Output also Exceeded Million Threshold in 2016

Bratislava, January 17 (TASR) – Slovakia’s automotive industry exceeded the one million threshold in terms of car output also in 2016, representatives of the Slovak Automobile Industry Association (ZAP) told a news conference on Tuesday.

Over 1.04 million vehicles were manufactured at Kia Motors Slovakia, Peugeot Citroen Slovakia and Volkswagen Slovakia plants last year. In comparison, Slovakia’s car output in 2015 reached 1.038 million.

Car production made up some 44 percent of the country’s industrial output and 35 percent of its exports. Slovakia is the global leader in terms of the number of vehicles produced per capita at 191 vehicles per 1,000 people, while the EU average was 40.8 vehicles in 2016.

According to ZAP, new car registrations hit record figures last year as well. In a cumulative comparison, car registrations amounted to 88,163 cars in 2016, which is an increase of 13.09 percent from the year before.

In addition to other tasks, ZAP will initiate discussions and support issues such as elaborating an analysis of the impact of industry digitalisation on employment, drafting a study on the requirements for developing applied research and development, the building of research and development workplaces also by the suppliers of car producers and developing cooperation between various branches of the economy.

ZAP was established in June 1993. It’s a voluntary association of corporate entities, currently representing the interests of 187 entities. It’s a member of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).
